Ethiopia's government announced that a recently amnestied general attempted a coup against the Amhara regional government, killing its president and a top adviser. In a related attack, a bodyguard killed the Army chief of staff and another general in the capital, Addis Ababa. The prime minister's office said the coup attempt has been foiled, with most of the perpetrators now in custody.
