I'm Angie Holan, Editor of PolitiFact. Thanks for signing up for our newsletter. I'd like to welcome you to the world of fact-checking and give you a little bit of background on who we are.
We were founded in 2007 as a project of the Tampa Bay Times, a regional newspaper based in St. Petersburg, Fla. We set out to rate the accuracy of claims by elected officials and others who spoke up in American politics. If you're curious, you can read more about our process of fact checking here.
In 2008, we made a name for ourselves during the presidential election. Our unique coverage earned us a Pulitzer Prize for National reporting and spurred an effort to begin fact-checking Congress, the White House, and the creation of the campaign promise tracking website we called the Obameter. Today, we have the Trump-O-Meter.
Last year we launched the Truth Squad, a membership program that connects fact-checking's biggest fans with access to behind the scenes content, live video streams with reporters and more.
We're excited to be entering the next phase of PolitiFact by joining forces with the Poynter Institute, a nonprofit school for journalists with its own storied history, and we are happy you are here for the ride. As we transition toward a nonprofit model, we will embrace our mission more than ever.
We hope to stand out in the world of wild talk and fake news.
