Official White House petition: Ask Pres. Obama to call for an amendment

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Dear Terry -

In about two weeks, President Obama will give his State of the Union speech, laying out his priorities for his second term as President.

We're partnering with Avaaz to launch a new petition on the White House's official petition site, asking President Obama to include a call for a constitutional amendment to overturn the Citizens United case in this major speech.

Sign onto this important petition to the President here.

Unlike most petitions we run, this one is on the White House's official site.  There's a White House policy that any petition generating at least 25,000 signatures will get an official response.

President Obama has voiced support for an amendment previously, in an online chat on the website Reddit.*  Here's what he wrote there:

"Over the longer term, I think we need to seriously consider mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United (assuming the Supreme Court doesn't revisit it). Even if the amendment process falls short, it can shine a spotlight of the super-PAC phenomenon and help apply pressure for change."

That helped, but it wasn't quite the full endorsement we're asking for here.

And that statement, and subsequent news coverage of it, had a much smaller audience than the State of the Union address will have.

Getting the President fully on board would be a gigantic step forward for our movement, raising our current momentum to a whole new level.

So this petition is a major opportunity to make a difference.

     Please sign on here.

Once you've signed on, please pass this message along to your concerned friends, asking them to join you.

Thanks!

Sincerely,

- Peter
