Obamacare Lives. What's Next?

By Adam Serwer

It survived.

The largest expansion of the American welfare state since the Great Society stands, upheld by the most conservative Supreme Court in decades. Yet the decision is not simply a landmark ruling, it is a monumental setback for a conservative movement strategy meant to sabotage, by all available means, the presidency of Barack Obama.

Here's where we go from here: [READ MORE]

We Could Stop Importing Oil From the Middle East Today if We Wanted

By Kevin Drum

Earlier this week the Wall Street Journal passed along some good news: Within a few years, America will be able to substantially reduce its dependence on Middle East oil. But the article mainly emphasizes the benefits of new shale oil fields that have been opened up by hydraulic fracturing; this is a misreading. Fracking is important, but it's not really the key to America's petroleum future.

Here are three things you should know from the recent release of the EIA's Annual Energy Outlook 2012: [READ MORE]

John Roberts Has Gone Rogue

Things we didn't expect to write: John Roberts joined the five most liberal justices in upholding Obamacare. (Ruth Bader Ginsburg, writing her own opinion, took time to needle Mitt Romney.) The conspiracy du jour: Roberts flipped at the last minute, leaving Scalia to write the dissent.

But don't worry: It's still the most conservative court we've seen in decades. (If you needed any more evidence, check out what they just said about campaign finance.)

Oh, and 65 percent of Americans think President Obama is better suited than Mitt Romney to respond to an alien invasion. You know, if it comes to that.

House votes to hold Atty. Gen. Eric Holder in contempt of Congress

Los Angeles Times | June 28, 2012 | 1:53 PM

The House today approved a resolution holding Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. in criminal contempt of Congress, the first time a sitting Cabinet member has been held in contempt.

Republicans pushed through the resolution because Holder has not turned over documents related to a botched gun-tracking operation known as Fast and Furious. A number of Democrats boycotted the vote.

A separate vote will be held to hold the attorney general in civil contempt.
