The Arcades: Contemporary Art and Walter Benjamin
The Jewish Museum
Based on the writings of the influential German-Jewish philosopher and cultural critic Walter Benjamin, this exhibition examines themes in the author’s magnum opus, The Arcades Project, through the lens of contemporary art. Benjamin’s volume uses the arcades of Paris — 19th-century iron-and-glass-vaulted shopping passages — as the starting point for a meditation on modern life and the origins of consumer culture. The Arcades: Contemporary Art and Walter Benjamin explores The Arcades Project and its ongoing relevance through contemporary artworks in photography, video, sculpture, and painting. In addition to traditional wall labels, poet Kenneth Goldsmith annotates each art work with appropriated texts, helping Benjamin’s ideas find a home in the 21st century.
