The U.S. government's creeping war on journalists

Three-quarters of journalists surveyed now agree that "the public is not getting the information it needs because of barriers agencies are imposing on journalists' reporting practices." That's the whole point of government secrecy, of course -- and the ramifications are predictable. In an information vacuum, the public is being systematically divorced from public policy, which is exactly what too many elected officials want.

U.S. Wants to Bomb ISIS In Syria ... Maybe We Should (cough) First Stop ARMING THEM?

Arming one side of Syria's multi-sided and bloody civil war will come back to haunt us. Past decisions by the U.S. to arm insurgencies in Libya, Angola, Central America and Afghanistan helped sustain brutal conflicts in those regions for decades.

Janet McKenzie: Sacred Art and the Feminine Spirit

Janet McKenzie's controversial painting, "Jesus of the People" was the first place winner of the National Catholic Reporter's global competition to identify an image of Jesus for the New Millennium. It has generated "shouts of praise and threats of death,", including hate mail and a demonstration by the infamous Westboro Baptist Church. The painting is currently on exhibit in the Vermont Festival of the Arts.

World's Largest Ice Sheets Melting at Fastest Rates in Recorded History

The world's two largest ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are melting at the fastest rates ever recorded, according to a new study based on detailed satellite imagery. Presented by scientists at the Germany-based Alfred Wegener Institute, the new research was conducted with the help of sophisticated mapping technology and the use of an ESA satellite (called CryoSat-2) which used radar technology to generate highly accurate elevation measurements of the ice sheets. What the detailed look at the ice shows is devastating.

Texas Governor Rick Perry Will Look Good In A White Cotton Jumpsuit

At the risk of being redundant and appearing to be gloating I just had to post this. Well, it has come to light that there were other Texas District Attorneys also partying during Rick Perry's tenure as Governor of Texas -- and lo and behold Rick didn't call for their resignations -- they were also arrested as was Austin District Attorney, Rosemary Lehmberg. I know, Rosemary's behavior was a little over the top, but you gotta love a drunk that's drunk and then goes to the liquor store and buys more booze and takes the time to mix drinks in the passenger seat of her car -- she really looked good in that Hannibal Lector biting restraint. However this really has nothing to do with Rick Perry's problems. What is relevant here is that the other District Attorneys, that Rick didn't demand the resignations of, were not investigating his actions as Governor -- Rosemary was.

Issa subpoenas Obama's chief of staff

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) issued a subpoena Friday for White House chief of staff Denis McDonough, arguing he has not cooperated with a GOP probe of President Obama's political office. Issa accused McDonough in a letter of failing to accept investigators' "good faith" effort to address concerns about revealing privileged communications between Obama and his staff. The move ratchets up the pressure from Issa in his investigation into whether the administration is using taxpayer dollars for political purposes.

CHENEY: Obama Would "Rather Be On The Golf Course" Than The Situation Room

Obama took a break from his vacation in Martha's Vineyard to give an angry and emotional speech condemning the jihadist group ISIS and praising Foley's career as a photojournalist. Among other things, Obama called ISIS a "cancer" in the world. According to a White House pool report, Obama then went to Farm Neck Golf Club with former Miami Heat player Alonzo Mourning and others. Cheney, a Republican and one of Obama's fiercest critics, said Obama should have instead decided to end his vacation and engage the situation.

Paul Krugman: Hawks Crying Wolf

With very few exceptions, officials and economists who issued dire warnings about inflation years ago are still issuing more or less identical warnings today. When economic myths persist, the explanation usually lies in politics -- and, in particular, in class interests. There is not a shred of evidence that cutting tax rates on the wealthy boosts the economy, but there's no mystery about why leading Republicans like Representative Paul Ryan keep claiming that lower taxes on the rich are the secret to growth.

Ryan, the House Budget Committee chairman paints a dim picture of fellow Republicans who get weak in the knees whenever he starts prattling on about dismantling Social Security as we know it. Public Pressure Can Influence The Federal Reserve

In assessing the potential impact of public protests on Fed policy it is perhaps worth going back to the 1990s when there were also some public efforts, sponsored by unions and community groups, to influence Fed policy. Ferguson: No Justice in the American Police State

Michael Brown's murder is reflective of the militarization of the police and police training that creates a hostile police attitude toward the public. The police are taught to view the public as threats against whom the use of violence is the safest course for the police officers.

Ukraine accuses Russia of invasion after aid convoy crosses border

The United States demanded Russia withdraw its equipment and personnel from Ukraine after Moscow sent in a convoy of trucks on Friday in what Kiev called a "direct invasion." A traffic police officer on the Russian side of the border, who had been escorting the aid convoy within Russian territory, said the entire convoy of about 260 trucks had passed into Ukraine. He said it was possible they would cross back into Russia on Friday evening after delivering their cargo. A Reuters cameraman said it had been possible to see inside some of the vehicles on Friday. The cargoes visible consisted of cardboard boxes with tinned food, pallets of bottled water, generators and other supplies.

Hydrogen from an AAA battery; future of our species may hang in the balance!

Although touted as zero-emissions vehicles, most fuel cell vehicle run on hydrogen made from natural gas. Now scientists have developed a low-cost, emissions-free device that uses an ordinary AAA battery to produce hydrogen by water electrolysis. Unlike other water splitters that use precious-metal catalysts, the electrodes in this device are made of inexpensive and abundant nickel and iron. [I view this as fantastically major; we will run on hydrogen if we are to continue as a species. It can be produced from renewable sources of any sort. H2 is not an "energy source" but it is THE energy carrier for anything we do today.]

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton perfectly summarized the United States' stance this week when she blamed Hamas' "anti-Semitism" for the more than 2,000 Palestinian deaths in the most recent conflict -- and not the arms the United States ships to Israel.
